About us:
Where the Music Began
Gabriel met Olivia in 2010. He remembers being struck almost immediately by her voice — its unusual combination of depth and innocence, maturity and vulnerability. There was something in it that recalled the intimate, unvarnished quality of singers such as Karen Dalton, Linda Perhacs and Vashti Bunyan: voices that seem to exist somewhere between fragility and complete conviction.
Gabriel had come to music through a different door. The son of Latin American parents, he learned Spanish guitar from his father, absorbing, almost by osmosis, the music of artists such as Atahualpa Yupanqui, Alfredo Zitarrosa and Mercedes Sosa. Those traditions became part of his musical vocabulary, even when they were no longer consciously in the foreground.
Olivia’s musical surroundings were shaped by another tradition. Her father, an oboist with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, introduced her early to the world of orchestral music — not only the repertoire, but the physical experience of sound: concert halls, long reverberations, the scale and silence surrounding a performance. Grieg, Debussy and Satie became part of the landscape.
When Olivia and Gabriel began making music together, these worlds met without either of them needing to be reconciled. Folk music, Latin American song, European classical music and the more elusive sensibilities of the new age era sit alongside one another. The result is less a fusion than a kind of shared atmosphere.
Their debut album, ".", carries that atmosphere strongly. It is difficult to separate the music from the Swedish landscape in which it was made: dark evergreens, open water, low northern light, birds somewhere in the distance. There is a melancholy to it, but not necessarily sadness. Nothing seems to be mourned.
If anything, the feeling is closer to stillness — the sensation of standing in a forest in the early morning, sunlight finding its way through the trees and catching the dew on the ground. For all its echoes of older music, "." feels less concerned with the past than with paying attention to what is immediately there.
A lake. A voice. The movement of trees.
And the quiet space between them.
